About

The podcast for LDS Gospel Doctrine teachers and enthusiasts

Weekly one hour Sunday-appropriate talk radio-style podcast

When you want more than just the manual

I started Gospel Talktrine to appeal to those people who want their Sunday School class to dive deeper. Drawing from years of experience as a teacher, writer, travel guide, and missionary, I’ll do more than help you study the scriptures—together, we’ll analyze them from a cultural, linguistic, historical, and literary viewpoint, all in a fast-paced, uplifting, and thought-provoking audio format you can take anywhere.

Our tools:

  • Teaching through the Spirit - without this, no real learning is possible.
  • Ancient Languages - shades of meaning are often hidden in the Greek and Hebrew origins of our modern scriptures, and in alternate translations.
  • Geography - I've been all over the ancient world, and strive to help my listeners visualize the settings of scriptural events.
  • Concurrent Blog - Each episode is accompanied with a blog post containing my preparation notes and visual aids, as well as more in-depth exploration of discussions cut short in the audio.

Lesson Prep

Gospel Talktrine is for anyone interested in LDS theology, but with a special emphasis on helping Gospel Doctrine teachers prepare their lessons, find the resources they need, and learn to love their calling.

Made for the Sabbath

If you want something to listen to on Sunday, and are in the mood for more than just music, take us along on your walk or drive. You’ll be educated and edified rather than merely entertained–though we aim for that, too!

OUR host

Brother Mark E. Holt has been studying, teaching, and writing about gospel doctrine for several years, beginning with a mission to Portugal and Cape Verde, where he got a hold of a Portuguese LDS Institute Manual and gained his love of his favorite book of scripture, the Old Testament, which has only increased in the years since.

Gospel Doctrine teacher is Mark’s favorite calling, which he has held various times, and he is a sought-after fireside and fifth-Sunday speaker. He has lived and traveled extensively in Israel, Jordan, Egypt, and Italy, studying both ancient scripture and modern culture, and has returned there various times with friends and pilgrims alike.

Mark is an avid talk radio listener, entrepreneur, beekeeper, and pilot. He is also an improv comedian, having performed for years with ComedySportz in Provo, an accomplished tenor with a weak spot for karaoke, and the author of the forthcoming fantasy series The Shadow Zodiac.

POPULAR QUESTIONS

Email us. Each week, certain of the messages we have received will be selected for discussion during the teaching part of the podcast, if they are especially relevant or illuminating. Of course, you won’t be able to know what direction we’ll take with the lesson in advance, so, in addition, we might read a few more emails before or after the main lesson.

Subscribers to our newsletter are prioritized in these selections, so we encourage you to sign up–we only use our list to send our weekly update and will never rent or sell it.

We will also periodically host live events, where phone, instant message, or other means may be provided to contact the host during the podcast. Watch for these events on our calendar.

We will do periodic “live” recordings of our podcast episodes, usually in an LDS meetinghouse in the Salt Lake area, as demand and circumstance permit.

To find out about these events, Like us on Facebook, subscribe to our newsletter, or watch our Calendar page.

Yes and no. The topic of each weekly podcast will come directly from that week’s lesson in the Gospel Doctrine manual, and will generally also cover the same scriptures. Our goal is to help you, the Gospel Doctrine teacher or student, to be better prepared to participate in the lesson.

However, rather than covering the ideas and questions in the manual, we aim to spend time on what interests us most from the passages in question. While this means there will naturally be a lot of overlap, there will also be plenty of things we cover that are missed in the manual and vice versa.

Other than belonging to it, none.
